Ancient Kleitor

At a distance of 3 km from Klitorιa in the village of Ano Klitoria, is the Archaeological Site of Ancient Klitor.

The Archaeological Site of Ancient Kleitor is one of the most important cities of ancient Azania. Because it is built on a plain, like other Arcadian cities and not on a hill, it was surrounded by strong walls for protection. Today, these walls are not preserved in good condition, because their material was used in the post-Byzantine and modern years to build the houses of the surrounding settlements. The wall is reinforced at distances by semicircular towers and was built during Hellenistic times.

From the latest excavations at the Archaeological Site of Ancient Kleitor, an important part of the fortification and its towers has been revealed. Part of the ancient theater has also been unearthed, but it is not in a good condition.

In front of the theater in a well-designed space, important theatrical performances are given every summer, since the use of the ancient theater is not allowed, due to preservation.

According to the tradition, the city was named after Kleitor, son of Azana.
